Grand Prix Phoenix has finally come to a close, which only means one thing – another AZMagicPlayers.com 2014 Legacy Series Event! On April 12th, we will be at ManaWerx (4920 W. Thunderbird Rd. Ste #122 Phoenix, AZ 85306), where players will be battling it out for a Volcanic Island and a Savannah. We’ll also be awarding the FTV: 20 to the player with the highest Series Points Total. Let’s take a look at our Top 5:
- Phimus Pan: 20
- Trevor Carr: 14
- Kyle Henriksen: 12
- Robert Greene: 11
- Mike Griffin: 11
Phimus has been on a winning streak lately, winning the March Event and the SCG LA Legacy Open with his BUG Control deck, putting him in prime position to take the FTV: 20. However, it is still possible for any of these other four players to at least tie for or even win the FTV: 20, though it does require more than winning the event, Phimus has to also fall out of the Top 8 (or Top 16, if we get 40 or more players). Did anyone order a tall?
What deck will win the event? Or even Top 8? That’s been a question in my mind for awhile now. Clearly, Death and Taxes has been the most represented deck, with 12 appearances so far among these past three events, but it failed to make Top 8 in March. People are prepared for the white menace. Every single event has seen eight different decks in the Top 8 – ranging from Infect and Affinity in January to Tin Fins in March, so the real question is: how well do you know your own deck? If you are intimately familiar with the interactions within your deck and how your deck interacts with the rest of the field, you will already be at a major advantage, no matter your matchups.
If you want some more insight on how to metagame for this incredibly diverse tournament series, check out two time Legacy Series Top 8 competitor Mike Griffin’s article, where he breaks down the metagame of the previous events and shows how to tweak your deck to fight Arizona’s Legacy Scene.
