Avondale City Championships Preview

Since our Gilbert City Championships in January, Legacy sure has shifted around. The release of Oath of the Gatewatch has shaken things up with the introduction of the Eldrazi! While it absolutely dominated Modern, big questions came up last weekend at the StarCityGames.com Open in Philadelphia, the first major US event with Eldrazi legal. The result?

Well, we may be living in an Eldrazi world.

It took the most spots in Day 2 and also put two decks into the Top 8 – Gerry Thompson fell in the finals with Colorless Eldrazi, losing to Noah Walker’s Grixis Delver, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a threat.

Creatures (21)
Eldrazi Mimic
Endbringer
Endless One
Matter Reshaper
Reality Smasher
Thought-Knot Seer

Spells (14)
Chalice of the Void
Mox Diamond
Thorn of Amethyst
Dismember
Warping Wail

Lands (25)
Ancient Tomb
Cavern of Souls
City of Traitors

Karakas
Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
Sideboard (15)

Sphere of Resistance

But to be honest? Eldrazi is already old news. Since Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch, it’s pretty much been the talk of the town. Let’s take a look at some other interesting events since our last Championships.

MKM Series Milan

MKM Series Milan took place in February and the winner was none other than Elves.

Creatures (30)
Deathrite Shaman
Wirewood Symbiote
Elvish Visionary
Nettle Sentinel
Heritage Druid
Quirion Ranger
Craterhoof Behemoth
Llanowar Elves
Scavenging Ooze
Wren’s Run Packmaster
Shaman of the Pack
Birchlore Rangers
Reclamation Sage
Gaddock Teeg

Spells (10)
Glimpse of Nature
Green Sun’s Zenith
Crop Rotation

Lands (20)

Sideboard (15)
Cabal Therapy
Thoughtseize
Surgical Extraction
Abrupt Decay
Pithing Needle
Null Rod
Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
Karakas

Pretty standard archetype, right? Until you look at the list. No Natural Order. Known by the player, Julian Knab, as Chaos Elves, this variant sports a much better Miracles matchup than its predecessor. Read his article here.

The Other Side of the Other Ocean

It’s often easy to forget that Japan has a wide and thriving Legacy scene. So much so, that in fact, this decklist won an 83-man event:

Creatures (5)
Bloodghast
Tombstalker

Spells (30)
Dark Ritual
Hymn to Tourach
Innocent Blood
Lingering Souls
Smallpox
Thoughtseize
Toxic Deluge
Vindicate
Liliana of the Veil

Lands (25)
Bloodstained Mire
Marsh Flats
Plains
Polluted Delta
Scrubland
Swamp
Verdant Catacombs
Wasteland
Windswept Heath
Sideboard (15)
Armageddon
Bitterblossom
Pithing Needle
Pox
Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
Surgical Extraction
Tormod’s Crypt
Umezawa’s Jitte

I mean just Pox would be surprising enough, but BW Pox? I would not have expected that.

SCG Classic Results

We also have a bunch of SCG Legacy Classics to look at. Let’s take a look at the following Classics:

And we see the following decks make the Top 8:

Deck Copies in T8
Miracles 7
RUG Delver 3
BUG Delver 2
Death and Taxes 2
Grixis Delver 2
Shardless BUG 2
Storm 2
UR Delver 2
Aluren 1
BUG Depths 1
Burn 1
Elves 1
Goblins 1
Infect 1
Lands 1
Maverick 1
MUD 1
Sneak Show 1

Miracles absolutely dominated these past couple months at SCG Classics, and it tends to be pretty well represented here in Arizona, so really, that leaves just one main thought in my mind.
